What is Magnetic Testing?

Magnetic Testing involves the magnetisation of a component, followed by the application of ferromagnetic particles. The particles align along discontinuities in the surface, or shallow sub-surface discontinuities. This method is used to test welds, castings, and forgings for surface or subsurface defects; however it can only be used on ferromagnetic metals.

What are the responsibilities of a individual who is certified to Magnetic Level 2?

An individual certified to Magnetic Level 2 has demonstrated competence to perform NDT according to Magnetic Testing procedures. Within the scope of the competence defined on the certificate, Level 2 personnel may be authorised by the employer to:

  • Select the Magnetic technique for the test method to be used;
  • Define the limitations of application of the testing method;
  • Translate NDT codes, standards, specifications and procedures into NDT instructions adapted to the actual working conditions;
  • Set up and verify equipment settings;
  • Perform and supervise tests;
  • Interpret and evaluate results according to applicable standards, codes, specifications or procedures;
  • Prepare Magnetic written instructions
  • Carry out and supervise all tasks at or below Level 2;
  • Provide guidance for personnel at or below Level 2, and
  • Report the results of Magnetic test

Why Do You Need Non Destructive Testing?

  • Improved quality:

    • NDT testing can help to identify defects in castings before they are shipped to customers. This can help to improve the quality of castings and reduce the number of defective castings that are produced.
  • Reduced costs:

    • NDT testing can help to reduce the cost of castings by preventing the need to replace defective castings. NDT testing can also help to reduce the cost of warranty claims.
  • Increased customer satisfaction:

    • NDT testing can help to increase customer satisfaction by ensuring that castings are of high quality and free of defects.
  • Improved safety:

    • NDT testing can help to improve the safety of castings by identifying defects that could lead to failure. This is especially important for castings that are used in critical applications, such as aircraft and automotive components.
  • Enhanced reputation:

    • NDT testing can help to enhance the reputation of a casting company by demonstrating its commitment to quality and safety.

ASNT NDT REQUIREMENTS:

An individual certified to Magnetic Level 1 has to demonstrate competence to carry out NDT according to written instructions and under the supervision of Level 2 or Level 3 personnel. Within the scope of the competence defined on the certificate, Magnetic Level 1 personnel may be authorised by the employer to perform the following in accordance with NDT instructions

The requirements for Penetrant Level 2 are: 3 months supervised work experience additional to Level 1 (4 months direct to Level 2).

Once the 12 additional hours training have been obtained, the examination passed, and 3 additional months supervised work experience obtained within 24 months of passing the exam, Cutech will issue certification based on employer's written practice.

The minimum requirements for Level 2 are additional to requirements already satisfied for Level 1.  If you are wishing to go direct to Level 2, the minimum work experience is 4 months, and the minimum training is 20 hours.  Note: The examination may be taken before the work experience is completed; however certificates are not issued until proof of work experience is provided.  After passing the examination, a results notice is issued by PCN, you then have 24 months to complete the required work experience.  For employer based schemes the expected amount of work experience should be determined in the written practice.
