About This Course

This course covers all theory aspects of the Ultrasonic Testing method and provides “hands-on” practical experience and so that will fulfil and improve the performance of learners to meet the standard requirements towards quality.

What is Ultrasonic Testing?

Ultrasonic is a high frequency of sound pulses that are emitted from a transducer above a sample. The sound waves propagate through the sample, and reflect at interfaces. The reflected waves are monitored using a detector above the sample. The thickness of the sample, and the depth and type of flaw can be ascertained using this method. The method can be applied to most materials if sound transmission is good. Quick high sensitive results are obtained.

What are the responsibilities of a individual who is certified to Ultrasonic Level 2?

An individual certified to Ultrasonic Level 2 has demonstrated competence to perform NDT according to Ultrasonic Testing procedures. Within the scope of the competence defined on the certificate, Level 2 personnel may be authorised by the employer to:

• Select the Ultrasonic technique for the test method to be used;
• Define the limitations of application of the testing method;
• Translate NDT codes, standards, specifications and procedures into NDT instructions adapted to the actual working conditions;
• Set up and verify equipment settings;
• Perform and supervise tests;
• Interpret and evaluate results according to applicable standards, codes, specifications or procedures;
• Prepare Ultrasonic written instructions
• Carry out and supervise all tasks at or below level 2;
• Provide guidance for personnel at or below level 2, and
• Report the results of Ultrasonic test

For Perform Ultrasonic Inspection (Advanced) -Level 2

Participant Prerequisites:

Below are the recommended minimum participant prerequisites for entry into this training programme. These prerequisites have been verified as essential to successful performance in the programme and on the job.

1. Physical traits or abilities
   1. Fit and healthy, Good eye sight to Jaeger 2
   2. Colour blindness 
   3. Able to stand for long periods of time
   4. Able to express ideas  and practice in a team based establishment

1. Previously learned skills
   1. have basic knowledge of engineering industry
   2. able to listen and speak English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System (ESS) level 4;
   3. be able to read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to ESS level 4; and
   4. be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to ESS level 4

   1. Metric and Imperial system
   2. Basics knowledge of Non-destructive testing
   3. WSH rules and regulations

1. Previously acquired attitudes
   1. Punctuality

Entry Requirements : Age: 16 years and above

Organization Experience : Minimum 3 months

ASNT NDT REQUIREMENTS:

An individual certified to Ultrasonic Level 1 has to demonstrate competence to carry out NDT according to written instructions and under the supervision of Level 2 or Level 3 personnel. Within the scope of the competence defined on the certificate, Magnetic Level 1 personnel may be authorised by the employer to perform the following in accordance with NDT instructions

The requirements for Penetrant Level 2 are: 3 months supervised work experience additional to Level 1 (4 months direct to Level 2).

Once the 12 additional hours training have been obtained, the examination passed, and 3 additional months supervised work experience obtained within 24 months of passing the exam, Cutech will issue certification based on employer's written practice.

The minimum requirements for Level 2 are additional to requirements already satisfied for Level 1.  If you are wishing to go direct to Level 2, the minimum work experience is 4 months, and the minimum training is 80 hours.  Note: The examination may be taken before the work experience is completed; however certificates are not issued until proof of work experience is provided.  After passing the examination, a results notice is issued by PCN, you then have 24 months to complete the required work experience.  For employer based schemes the expected amount of work experience should be determined in the written practice.

Perform Ultrasonic Inspection (Advanced) training covers the following:

General Theory:

• Principles of Ultrasonic Testing
• Equipment
• Testing techniques
• Calibration of testing systems

Sector Specific Theory:

• Detectability of defects
• Factors affecting the performance of the Ultrasonic test
• Codes of practice and standards
• Conducting and recording the test
• Interpretation of test results
• Product technology theory

We can provide Ultrasonic Testing training suitable for candidates working to an employer written practice based on SNT-TC-1A; EN4179 and NAS410. 

The PCN requirements for Ultrasonic Level 2 are: 9 months supervised work experience additional to Level 1 (12 months direct), to be obtained either before the examination, or within 24 months after passing the exam.

For Ultrasonic Plate Tester Level 2 only 4 months work experience is required.

Once the 40 additional hours training have been obtained, the examination passed, and 9 additional months supervised work experience obtained within 24 months of passing the exam, PCN will issue certification.

For employer based schemes the expected amount of work experience should be determined in the written practice.

All other equipment and training materials are provided by Cutech.

Protective gloves, protective eye glasses and plastic aprons are also available for the use of students.

We provide examinations for Ultrasonic Testing, including examination for employers based schemes such as SNT-TC-1A, NAS410, EN4179, to Levels 1, 2 and 3.

The UT Level 2 examination includes a general theory paper, specific paper, and a practical exam.

The requirements for Level 2 UT are: 40 hours training if Level 1 is held, or 80 hours direct to level 2, previous to the exam, and 9 months supervised work experience additional to Level 1 (12 months direct), to be obtained either before the examination, or within 24 months after passing the exam.

Once the 40 additional hours training have been obtained, the examination passed, and 9 additional months supervised work experience obtained within 24 months of passing the exam, Cutech will issue certification.
